Sustainability Intern, Village of Northbrook, IL

The Village of Northbrook, Illinois (population 35,222), is a thriving, progressive community strategically located 25 miles north of Chicago. The Village of Northbrook is hiring a Sustainability Intern in the Development and Planning Services Department during the summer season. 


  • Responsibilities include but are not limited to development of social media and communications content,

  • Outreach and content collection for online interactive story map, data collection and entry, and

  • Preparing research documents, presentations, and programming for environmental education and advocacy initiatives.  


Intern should be comfortable attending community events as a representative of the Village and responding to calls and email requests from community members. 


Must be skilled in the use of Microsoft Office software including Word and Excel and be able to communicate effectively and professionally both orally and in writing. 


This position requires the applicant be at least 18 years of age with a High School diploma or general education degree (GED) or any combination of experience and education that is equivalent to completion of four years of high school with courses in environmental sciences or biology. Candidates currently enrolled as a full-time student in an undergraduate program majoring in Environmental Science, Environmental Studies, Sustainability, Biology, Geography, Urban Planning, or related fields are preferred.


This position pays $17.00 per hour. The Village is seeking a seasonal commitment (start and end dates flexible).
