Community Development Intern, City of Wood Dale, IL

The City of Wood Dale is currently accepting applications for the Community Development Intern. The intern will have the opportunity to gain practical, hands-on experience working alongside experienced planning professionals. The position will provide exposure to a wide diversity of projects including zoning reviews, economic development, long-range planning, City commissions and more.

The Community Development department has 8 employees responsible for supporting elected and appointed bodies such the CDC, SEEC, and Planning Zoning and Building Committee (PZB), and City Council. Staff review building permit applications to ensure compliance with applicable zoning, engineering, and building codes. Several programs are housed in Community Development like rental housing registration and business licensing. The department also administers economic development initiatives to support local businesses. A façade-improvement program is available for commercial properties, while TIF districts help promote redevelopment in key areas. Staff often work collaboratively with other departments, such as Public Works, to realize complex development projects. Therefore, many Wood Dale staff are “generalists”, with experience in different aspects of the development process.

The most qualified candidates will have strong writing, research, and communication skills. Opportunities may be available to present at public hearings, such as the Community Development Commission (CDC), and Streetscape and Economic Enhancement Commission (SEEC), so effective public presentation skills are also strongly desired. This position is ideal for students pursuing a career in local government, city planning, or public administration.

This position pays $18 per hour depending on qualifications. The work schedule is Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The successful candidate must be able to work approximately 20 hours per week with flexibility offered to accommodate their class schedule.

A valid Illinois driver’s license is required.

Applications are accepted until the positions are filled.
