Planning and Zoning Intern, Village of Franklin Park, IL

The Village of Franklin Park, located immediately northwest of the City of Chicago, seeks a Planning & Zoning Intern to undertake planning, zoning, and development projects in the Village. This position reports to the Director of Community Development and Zoning. 


The position will be full-time (40 hrs. per week) from June 1st to September 1st with potential for a part-time extension.  The hourly wage for this position is $17 per hour.


Responsibility:

The intern will focus on zoning initiatives, including day-to-day permit review, and zoning enforcement. They will also be immersed in other aspects of the department, including economic development initiatives, and planning related projects such as the CMAP Grand Avenue Corridor study. Responsibilities will also include data collection and research related to Village commercial and industrial properties. 


Duties of the Position:

  • Building permit review for zoning compliance.

  • Property research involving the creation of an available property map and conditions report.

  • Assist with business and community outreach for various planning related projects.

  • Clerical duties such as filing, organizing, and providing customer support on general inquiries.

  • Field survey work, research, and data collection for various projects.

  • Providing updates to the Zoning Department’s GIS database.

  • Other Planning duties as assigned.


Minimum Qualifications:

  • Education:          

    • In the process of obtaining a master’s degree from an accredited university in urban planning or a closely related field; and

    • A bachelor’s degree from an accredited university in urban planning or a closely related field;

    • Minimum grade point average of "C" or equivalent - applicant must include proof from current school of grade point average;

  • Must be 18 (at the time of application

  • Strong writing skills with the ability to compose detailed technical reports

  • Excellent oral communication and interpersonal skills

  • Experience using basic computer software, including Microsoft Word and Excel

  • Experience using the Adobe Creative Cloud (InDesign, Illustrator, and Photoshop)

  • Experience with GIS technologies.
