3/8 - Equitable Public Engagement: Participatory Budgeting for Transportation Funds (CM | 1.5)

Updated: Jan 2, 2020

Attendees will gain a better understanding of how and why the California Department of Transportation and regional authorities have applied participatory budgeting (PB) to mid-range transportation planning grant programs. Attendees will know the basic concepts of participatory budgeting, equitable public participation, and how these differ from and/or complement conventional planning processes such as hearings, visioning sessions, charettes, etc. Attendees will learn where to find resources related to how to start a participatory budgeting process, case studies of PB in U.S. communities, and sample language from California and other jurisdictions to include PB in local and state planning RFPs and ordinances. Attendees will have the opportunity to have their questions related to the application of PB in CA and other US jurisdictions answered in an interactive forum.
