4/2/20 - APA-CMS & MDRN Program: Suburban Design Challenges Webinar (CM | 1.5)

Updated: Nov 3, 2021

The APA-CMS and Municipal Design Review Network (MDRN) have tentatively rescheduled their 3/19/20 in person program as a webinar on April 2, 2020! Join us for a joint program exploring strategies for successful suburban design. We'll explore the rapidly changing nature of retail, increased interest in apartment living, and some of the vexing challenges facing suburbs seeking to create community identities, unique downtown experiences, and consistent design culture.

Our discussion will explore why design guidelines have trouble keeping up with design trends. Yet commercial design in communities without guidelines often reflect development styles from the 70s or 80s that hasn’t aged well. We'll ask: how have communities overcome this problem? How has meaningful design and placemaking found its way into contemporary development? We'll hear from a developer about contemporary site planning, an architect about contemporary design, and a community that can speak on the design review component of mixed-use projects in their downtown.

Speakers currently include:

  • Robert J Burk, II - Co-Founder and Managing Partner, UrbanStreet Group, LLC

  • Consuelo Arguilles - Deputy Director of Community Development, Village of Mount Prospect
