Reporting to the Director of Community Development, this position conducts in-depth research and makes recommendations on preservation standards and efforts. Regular duties include collecting, analyzing, and presenting data related to Geneva's Historic District, sites and structures; as well as reviewing permits, plans and other work related to planning and development. As staff liaison to the Historical Preservation Committee, this position provides guidance on City codes, ordinances and policies to community partners and stakeholders.

Job Duties:

  • Conduct surveys identifying and evaluating historic buildings and structures throughout the City.

  • Analyze historic preservation data and make recommendations for future planning.

  • Review development proposals, building permits and site plans within the historic district.

  • Work with City staff and stakeholders to uphold preservation guidelines and standards.


  • A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in historic preservation, preservation planning, architectural history, urban planning, land use planning, architecture, or a related field; and,

  • Two to four years of progressively responsible, related experience; or,

  • Any combination of education, training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the essential functions of the job.

Special Requirements:

  • Preferred candidates will have a demonstrated understanding of historic preservation and urban planning principles, as well as a working knowledge of historic and contemporary construction means and methods.

  • Candidates must have the ability to read and interpret architectural plans, specifications and drawings. Prior experience doing so is preferred.

  • This position requires exceptional communication skills, both written and oral, and ideal candidates will enjoy working with a wide array of individuals ranging from City staff to members of the community.

  • Applicants should have the ability to attend night and weekend meetings as necessary.


The Starting rate of pay $82,231 per year and actually salary is DOQ. The City of Geneva offers an exceptional benefits participation in the Illinois Municipal Retirement Fund pension program.
