The Village of Villa Park is a thriving community of about 22,000 residents located 12 miles south of O’Hare International Airport and 19 miles west of the City of Chicago.  The Community & Economic Development Department is seeking a motivated individual with a positive attitude to fill a full-time Planner (technical) position.

JOB SUMMARY: This is a non-exempt entry-level Planner position which includes; coordinates development applications, site plan review, collects and analyzes planning data; prepares planning studies and reports; assists in policy analysis and formulation; maintains data files for an GIS; reviews sign permit and Certificate of Occupancy applications; reviews development applications and prepares staff reports for zoning changes, code amendments and special use permits and variances. Additionally, will assist with Planning and Zoning Commission functions and exercises a high level of discretion with making decisions. The Planner will work under general direction of the Deputy Director of Community & Economic Development.

Applicants will need to work in a fast-paced environment, be detail-oriented, and be able to multi-task.  Strong organizational skills including attention to detail, problem solving and follow through a must.  Must be able to perform daily functions of the office without specific direction and supervision.  Strong written and oral skills and effective working relationships with others to provide excellent customer service a must.

WORK SCHEDULE: Monday- Friday, 40-hour work week.

ANNUAL SALARY RANGE: $61,796 – $63,668.  Actual starting salary pay dependent on qualifications, experience, and professional achievement.  This position is non-exempt and represented by a union, subject to the AFSCME collective bargaining agreement.

  • Bachelor’s degree in Planning, Political Science, Geography, Architecture, Public Administration, or related field; or an equivalent combination of education, experience and/or training will be considered.

  • Experience in working with the public in a customer service environment is preferred.

  • 0-2 years of experience in a Community Development Department, or a government setting is preferred.
