For those interested in sitting for a 2021 AICP Examination, the APA's Certification Diversity Scholarship program is now available. The American Planning Association is committed to providing opportunities for all to achieve excellence in planning by fostering equity, diversity, and inclusion in the organization and in the planning profession.

AICP scholarships help make the planning profession more diverse and accessible to those with financial need. Diversity is an inclusive concept which encompasses, but not is not limited to race, ethnicity, class, gender, age, sexuality, ability, educational attainment, spiritual beliefs, creed, culture, tribal affiliation, nationality, immigration status, political beliefs, and veteran status.

To assist with this effort, the APA has provided 3 (three) AICP Certification Diversity Scholarships to the Illinois Chapter to be applied to the May or November 2021 testing window. Under this program, APA-IL Scholarship recipients pay reduced fees to AICP as follows:

If a scholarship applicant has already paid the exam fee, the difference will be refunded. Please note that the awarding of a scholarship does not guarantee that a recipient will be approved to take the AICP Exam. The exam application will be evaluated like any other.

Selection Guidelines and Instructions:

  • Illinois' APA national members should submit a brief letter to pdo@ilapa.org describing how they identify with any of the diverse populations listed above. Deadline for the May 2021 Exam: November 27, 2020.

  • Once state chapter PDOs have selected the scholarship recipient(s), recipients names and membership information is sent to APA national.

  • APA national Staff will verify availability of the chapter’s allocated scholarships and send a confirmation email to the Illinois PDO and scholarship recipient that includes instructions on how to apply the scholarship code at checkout.

Please note:

  • AICP Certification Diversity Scholarships are open to members of the national American Planning Association only (not Illinois Chapter-Only members).

  • The awarding of a scholarship does not guarantee essay approval or a passing exam score.

  • Final decisions on scholarships shall be at the sole discretion of the APA Illinois Professional Development Officer (PDO) and shall be final.

  • All nominations/selection of scholarship recipients shall be strictly confidential.

  • Recipients will be notified as soon as possible.

If you're thinking ahead to the November 2021 exam, please go ahead email pdo@ilapa.org now and indicate that you're interested in the scholarship for the fall 2021 exam.
