Champaign County RPC Hosts Plan Commissioner Training on 4/1/24

Training was held on April 1, 2024 for the Champaign County Regional Plan Commission’s Member Agency’s Boards and Commission Members, which included Plan Commission, Zoning Board of Appeals, and Historic Preservation Commission members. The training covered roles and responsibilities of boards and commission members; the basics of open meetings act and conflicts of interest; the planning process including city wide plans like a Comprehensive Plan and smaller plans like a neighborhood plan or corridor plan; and how broad concepts approved in vision plans can be incorporated into policy and regulatory documents.  There were 15 attendees from around Champaign County.  The training session was presented by APA-IL members Stephanie Brown, AICP with Chastain and Associates and Jeff Marino, AICP, Senior Planner with the City of Champaign.

Many thanks to Gabe Lewis, AICP, with Champaign County RPC, for organizing the session.

Save the Date! September 26th Plan Commissioner Training at the 2024 State Conference. Open to all!

The 2024 APA-IL State Conference will be held September 25-27, 2024 in Champaign, IL. The all-day plan commissioner training that APA-IL traditionally holds at the conference will take place on September 26th at the City of Champaign's City Hall, located in beautiful downtown Champaign. The registration fee is just $75!

What's so special about this all day training? Unlike our evening training, we are able to take a deep dive into a lot of the content that our evening session highlights. There also is a variety of communities in the training so attendees are able to learn from their peers.

  • The morning agenda consists of the content used during our evening Plan Commissioner Trainings in communities.

  • A networking lunch is included where attendees have a chance to talk amongst themselves about the trials and tribulations of being a commissioner or board member.

  • The afternoon agenda is set to apply the knowledge that you've gained during the morning session. Attendees will be taken to a nearby site and will be able to talk through a site review. Afterwards attendees will participate in a mock hearing.

The APA-IL's fabulous faculty members will be onsite to guide attendees through the day:

  • Tom Farace, AICP, Village of Carol Stream and APA-IL's Planning Officials Development Officer

  • Greg Jones, AICP, Partner at Ancel Glink

We are excited to have a special guest join us in the afternoon this year, Katherine Trotter, Zoning Administrator for the City of Champaign.
