Associate Planner, Village of Tinley Park, IL

The Village of Tinley Park (population approx. 57,000) seeks qualified applicants for the full-time position of Associate Planner. The Community Development Department is comprised of three divisions, economic development, planning and building. All three divisions work together to improve the quality of life in Tinley Park. The Village of Tinley Park is a great opportunity for a planner because of its diversity in current and long-range planning projects available in a large suburban community. There is a diverse land use and tax base mix that allows Tinley Park to be a premier location to live, work, and play which the department works to strengthen. The Village is actively engaged in a number of planning project areas including redevelopment of the downtown, 280-acre mental health center, amphitheater/entertainment district, I-80 corridor, and Village-wide transportation and sustainability planning.

The Associate Planner is responsible for a wide range of professional duties assisting the Planning Manager and Community Development Director in developing policies and procedures regarding planning matters for consideration and approval of various boards. This position will review development applications, provide technical information, advice, and guidance on land development and applicable Village regulations. Will also advise the Planning Manager on planning and development matters, prepare comments and memos for projects, and prepare and present to the Plan Commission and Zoning Board of Appeals meetings.

This position will work primarily with the general public regarding planning, permitting, zoning, and related development policies and procedures. Responsible for reviewing applications and development plans for conformance to local codes, plans, policy; inspect and survey development sites; collect, organize, and analyze information pertaining to plans and developments; advise developers; prepare maps, charts, and tables illustrating statistical and technical information and data. Will regularly perform research and develop recommendations regarding growth management, monotony code, subdivision ordinance, development applications, submittal requirements, and other long range and broad policy matters as well as review of land development regulations that meet the Village’s specifications, technical requirements, and standards, determining property floodplain status and assist in the administration of the Community Rating Service. In addition, this position will provide technical assistance and information to Village staff in the administration of the Zoning Ordinance as it relates to Freedom of Information Acts (FOIA) requests, change of use/change of owner reports, and building permit reviews.

Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree from an accredited four-year college or university in Urban Planning or a related field along with a minimum of one (1) to three (3) year(s) of experience in Urban Planning. A valid Driver’s License is also required. Must be familiar with GIS software used in planning and development work. AICP preferred.

The ideal candidate will possess an outstanding work ethic, positive attitude, and be self-motivated. They will be familiar with principles, practices, and objectives of municipal government and urban planning. They will be able to conduct thorough research in order to prepare clear, concise and comprehensive reports. They will be an excellent communicator and demonstrate solid written and presentation skills. Previous experience with significant development projects is a huge plus. Must be able to work collaboratively and effectively communicate technical and non-technical information providing a high level of customer service.

Compensation & Benefits: The salary range for this position is $60,000 – $75,000 +/- DOQ plus a generous benefit package including health/dental insurance, vision, employer-paid life insurance and other optional programs. Retirement benefits through the Illinois Municipal Retirement Fund (IMRF) are provided along with the option to participate in a 457(b) plan. The Village of Tinley Park also provides for paid vacation, personal days, and paid Village holidays.

Residency Requirement: All employees in this position are required to reside within thirty (30) miles from any border of Tinley Park, within twelve (12) months of employment date. Residency in Indiana in not permitted. No relocation expenses provided or reimbursed.
