APA-IL Plan Commissioner Training comes to Homer Glen

Updated: Nov 4, 2021

On January 16, 2020 the Village of Homer Glen hosted a training workshop for their Plan Commission. Since the program began in 2011, the Illinois Chapter of APA and the Chaddick Institute at DePaul University have provided over 100 training sessions. Eleven people, including six members of the Plan Commission, two Trustees and three staff members, attended the workshop. Marty Scott, AICP and Emily Egan, AICP were the trainers for the session.

At the conclusion of the workshop, the attendees completed an anonymous evaluation form. They listed the following as the most helpful topics from the session:

  • Comp Plan

  • Annexations

  • Zoning

  • PUD, variances, special uses

  • Ethics

  • Legal issues

  • Responsibilities and roles of the Commission

One commissioner suggested that a future session cover how to read the ordinances, as often the language is difficult for lay people. Another commented that all of it was very helpful since they were new to the Commission.

Thank you to the Village of Homer Glen for inviting us to train your plan commissioners.
