APA-IL Brings Plan Commissioner Training to the Village of Lisle

Updated: Jan 19, 2022

On November 8, 2021, a group of planning and legal professionals hosted a Plan Commission Training in the Village of Lisle, led by Andy Cross, AICP from the City of Highland Park, Mike Schwarz, AICP from the Village of Frankfort, and Attorney Dan Bolin of Ancel Glink, P.C. The presentation was well-attended by 11 Village officials and staff, including members of the Planning & Zoning Commission, the Mayor, Village Trustees, Village Manager, Development Services Director, and Corporation Counsel.

Participants reviewed best practices to avoid the legal and practical pitfalls often encountered in plan commission meetings and public hearings. Presenters shared insight from their careers and discussed plan commission meeting procedures, supporting decisions with standards and the comprehensive plan, and taking a multidisciplinary approach to planning. One participant remarked that the “entire presentation was valuable,” and other participants found the training to be helpful as both a review of general planning practices and an update on recent case authority and other developments.

Thanks to Matt Havlik and Jack Knight from the Village Manager’s office for arranging this training, and to the Village of Lisle for this opportunity to discuss planning with their officials and staff!
