On Friday, June 10, 2022 join representatives from the City of Champaign and the City of Urbana as they take you through two exciting projects that have been a long time in the making.

Please be sure to check the weather before the day begins. It's spring in the Midwest which means you may need sunscreen or an umbrella or both! We will be outside enjoying nature for most of the day.

The Story of the Boneyard Creek – Champaign

Led by T.J. Blakeman, AICP Senior Planner for Economic Development

Continue our Boneyard Creek conference session with an in person visit to Champaign. Our walking tour will highlight the tax credit neighborhood redevelopment of Bristol Park, partnerships with the Champaign Park District, an up-close look at the ecology of the creek, discussion of maintenance needs and lessons learned, and witness in person the amazing and explosive growth of Campustown.

Downtown Urbana’s Historic District

Led by Kevin Garcia, AICP Principal Planner, and Alice Novak, Historic Preservation Commission Chair

This walking tour (click here for tour map) will highlight many of the properties of the Downtown Urbana Historic District, our newest National Register listing. You will learn how the city collaborated with local business owners to establish a district that is bringing cultural and economic benefits to the area. We will stroll from the under-renovation Hotel Royer, past cinemas-turned-galleries, banks-turned-restaurants, and post offices-turned-community centers. Click here for a Pocketsights Tour of these landmarks! We’ll finish at a foundry-turned-microbrewery, next to Boneyard Creek Crossing, Urbana’s Jewel of the Boneyard. See you there!
