Green Street Walking Tour (CM 1.5)
After meeting and networking at Café Bene, attendees will be joined by City of Champaign staff for a walking tour of Green Street. The tour will end at Legends for lunch (food & beverage on your own).
2023 Planning Colloquium (CM | 1.0)
After lunch at Legends, attendees will walk to Temple Buell Hall for lecture and workshop. The lecture is part of the Department of Urban and Regional Planning's 2023 Planning Colloquium.
Our Public Realms define the essence of the places we inhabit – our streets, open spaces, natural areas, waterways, and all other public spaces that are forever protected for everyone to use and enjoy. Ferhat Zerin, FAICP will share real projects that showcase the art and science of designing public realms for regions, cities, suburbs, and neighborhoods. The lecture will be followed by an interactive drawing workshop on basic master planning tools that are essential for creating enduring public realms (see below).
Let's Bake a Master Plan Workshop (CM | 2.0)
Following the lecture, Ferhat Zerin, FAICP will lead professionals and students through the Let's Bake a Master Plan workshop. Free drawing supplies will be provided for you to use and take home thanks to the APA-ISS!
Making a master plan can be just like baking a cake! You need a great framework (recipe), great plan elements (ingredients), and the right drawing/design tools (utensils). You need to practice (and practice more) until you find your own way to draw and design. Most importantly, you have to love the process of making, and the joy of watching others enjoy places you helped create.
During this interactive workshop, experts Ferhat Zerin, FAICP, and Pericles Georgopoulos will help you improve your hand drawing skills and show you how you can draw a great (and delicious) master plan. This master plan cooking class is open to everyone -
First time bakers: If you have no hand drawing skills – come and learn the basics of drawing a plan.
Food Critics: If you are a municipal planner – see how a quick hand drawing can fix a plan you are reviewing.
Julia Child Proteges: If you are an experienced designer – join us for a fun drawing workout!
Just like with baking, the best way to learn is through hands-on experience. Experts will teach attendees the basics of hand drawing using three activities.
