It is the responsibility of each nominee to provide complete documentation by 5/19/22 at 8:00 CST in order to be considered for the Chapter slate. We cannot extend the deadline further due to election deadlines with APA national.

Are you interested in become an officer of the APA-IL Board of Directors? How about a position on either the Chicago Metro Section (APA-CMS) or Illinois State Section (APA-ISS) Boards? Now is your chance! The deadline for nominations is May 16, 2022 at 11:59 pm PST. The 2022 nomination portal has opened for 2022 APA and Illinois Chapter July elections. Per the APA-IL Bylaws approved in October of 2019, Illinois Chapter members are to elect the following officers to the Chapter Board of Directors as well as positions for the two Chapter Sections. Submit Your Nomination

The deadline for submitting nominations is May 16, 2022 at 11:59 pm PST.


The next term of office will commence on January 1, 2023. Terms run for 2 years with the exception of President Elect. Per the Illinois Chapter bylaws, the President Elect will automatically become President immediately following a one-year term as President Elect. The President will serve a two-year term then immediately serve as Past President for a one-year term.

Let's get started...

Members can begin submitting their names, position statements, and optional photograph via the American Planning Association's (APA) nomination portal.

  1. Nominees will be asked to submit a 600-word (maximum) candidate statement, which is a combination of biographical background and a position statement of why you want to serve. Candidates for these offices can also upload an photograph (optional) via APA’s online portal by May 16, 2022 at 11:59 PST.

  2. After May 16th, all nominations will be verified by the APA-IL Nominations Committee for membership confirmation, ethics review, application completeness, and compliance with APA National’s Campaign Policies and Procedures. If an applicant has an incomplete application after May 16th, they will be disqualified.

  3. After the May 16th application deadline, verified nominees with a complete application may be contacted to schedule a phone interview at the discretion of the APA-IL Nominations Committee.

  4. After interviews, a slate of candidates will be determined by the APA-IL Nominations Committee and delivered to APA by May 25th. The Nominating Committee will evaluate the applications to identify those who meet the highest standards of leadership ability, integrity, judgment, competence, and personal commitment. In this process, Nominating Committee members will view all names submitted with an open mind and will not be unduly influenced by any individual viewpoint in making their selections.

  5. On July 19th the election polls will open and members will be sent an email with a link to their ballot.

  6. August 20th polls close.

  7. August/early September the APA-IL will notify all candidates of election results.

It is the responsibility of each nominee to provide complete documentation through APA’s portal by May 16, 2022 at 11:59 pm PST. If a nominee is having difficulty submitting their information, using the online form, or have any questions regarding APA's portal, DirectNominations, nominees will need to contact getinvolved@planning.org


Nominees must have the following qualifications:

  • Each officer candidate shall be a member of the APA-IL Chapter for at least twelve (12) months prior to taking office.

  • APA-IL Chapter-Only members are eligible to serve as a member of the Board of Directors with the exception of President-Elect or Professional Development Officer.

APA's online nominations portal is called DirectNominations. If you have never used the nominations website, you'll need to click on "sign up here" to register. You will be asked to confirm your email address before you can log in. If you have any DirectoNominations questions, email getinvolved@planning.org

APA Division and Student Representatives Council (SRC) are also holding elections this year!

APA National members are also eligible to serve on their Division and Student Representatives Council boards.


Leadership positions in the following APA Divisions are on the 2022 ballot: Economic Development Division, Environment, Natural Resources, and Energy Division, Federal Planning Division, Food Systems Division, International Division, Planning and Law Division, Planning and the Black Community Division, Regional and Intergovernmental Division, Small Town and Rural Planning Division, Sustainable Communities Division, Technology Division, Transportation Planning Division, and Women and Planning Division.


The Student Representatives Council (SRC) is a place for students and emerging professionals to jumpstart their path within the planning profession. Elected leaders within the SRC help make connections between APA's growing student population and contribute to strategic initiatives across the organization.
