Small-scale development is the backbone of Illinois communities big and small. It’s the modest, pedestrian-oriented buildings on our Main Streets and the missing middle housing in our most walkable neighborhoods. Chances are that if you asked your neighbors what their favorite part of town is, many of them would select areas characterized by small-scale development. Nevertheless, small-scale development has taken a backseat to larger developments by professional developers in recent decades.
How can planners, elected officials, and bold citizens revive a culture of small-scale development in their communities? Who are the parties involved, and what are the barriers that might exist in your community?
This conference will answer some of those questions for you by connecting you with Illinois planners and non-planners. The Illinois State Section (APA-ISS) is proud to partner with the Incremental Development Alliance to shine a light on small-scale development.
