Palos Park Plan Commissioner Training

Updated: Jan 2, 2020

APA-IL and DePaul University’s Chaddick Institute recently co-sponsored a Plan Commission training workshop hosted by the Village of Palos Park. The training on April 11, 2018 was the chapter’s 83rd session. The Mayor, two members of the Village Council, six members of the Plan Commission, five members of the ZBA, the Village Manager and staff attended. Bob Sullivan, FAICP and Laurie Marston, FAICP were the trainers.

The group asked several questions, including:

  • Are other communities reducing the minimum lot sizes in single family districts?

  • How frequently should the comprehensive plan and zoning ordinance be updated?

  • Why are ex parte conflicts a problem?

  • What is the difference between a true conflict of interest and merely the appearance of impropriety?

Among the most helpful topics the commissioners listed on the anonymous evaluation forms were: the duties of ZBA members, ex parte, ethics and conflicts of interest.
