Plan Commissioner Training Comes to Elmhurst

Updated: Jan 2, 2020

The City of Elmhurst hosted a Plan Commission training workshop on March 20, 2018. The session was co-sponsored by APA-IL and DePaul University’s Chaddick Institute. Seven members of the Zoning and Planning Commission, the Assistant City Manager and staff attended. Michael Blue, FAICP and Courtney Kashima, AICP were the trainers for the Chapter’s 81st training workshop.

Since it was a small group, the commissioners commented on the anonymous evaluation forms that they appreciated the informal discussion. Among the most helpful topics they listed were:

  • Discussion of zoning issues in other communities

  • Explanation of various terms

  • Discussion about motions

The group asked many questions, including about:

  • Taking testimony

  • Robert’s Rules

  • The standards of review for conditional uses and for variations.

One commissioner was enjoying the training so much, it was suggested that the workshop be as long as a day, rather than one evening!
