Register for Plan Commissioner Training at the 2017 State Conference in September!

Updated: Nov 5, 2021

Don’t miss the Plan Commissioner Training opportunity on Thursday, September 14th at the 2017 APA-IL State Conference #APAIL17 in Naperville. Register or urge your plan commissioners to register for this affordable, one-of- a-kind, testimonial approved learning opportunity. Registration is now open.

During this one-day, premiere commissioner training program, commissioners will learn the essential elements of creating and maintaining an efficient and productive Plan Commission process. The session, led by planners and attorney with years of experience serving commissions, will focus on topics including how to ensure appropriate findings of fact are prepared, using master plans and zoning ordinances as effective tools, and helpful tips for running the meetings. Lessons learned will be applicable to members of other commissions, who are certainly welcome to attend. Other reasons to attend include:

  • Learn about the legal aspects of the development review process and requirements related to conflict of interest, ethics and the Open Meetings Act that will be discussed by a panel including two practicing municipal attorneys.

  • Participate in (or observe if you prefer) a mock public hearing which will be entertaining as well as educational about best practices that you can apply at your next hearing.

  • Network with commissioners from around the state at a lunch just for commissioners and use this unique opportunity to share tips with peers and learn how other commissioners have dealt with the same issues that you face.

  • Hear specific examples from experienced planners, which is a great introduction for new commissioners and a good refresher for long time commissioners.

  • The daylong session is only $75 per commissioner.

APA-IL and DePaul University’s Chaddick Institute have conducted 70 sessions to strong reviews:

"I learned a lot and it was very much worth my time"

"Good mix of principles and practices"

"Great job with very clear and capable speakers"
