PLANNER TOOLBOX TRAINING: Quick Sketch Drawing Techniques


Building on workshops offered in 2016, Bruce Bondy of Bondy Studio will be leading another series of workshops for planners and designers to hone their freehand drawing and visualization skills as part of the Planner Toolbox series.

A pair of workshops taught by an award winning Architectural Illustrator is for design professionals looking to develop fundamental drawing skills. Whether a novice at drawing or a veteran seeking to hone your chops you will learn to draw with the confidence to illustrate your ideas and communicate more effectively with clients and colleagues. The workshops is are a hands-on experience with group instruction, demos, and one-on-one coaching feedback. You will come away energized and excited about drawing and with the tools to develop your visualization skills in your professional practice.

Attendees need not have attended previous workshops. While it is recommended to attend both, don’t hesitate to join either workshop if that is all your schedule or resources permits.

Part 1: Eye Level, Streetscape Drawing Friday, June 2, 2017: 12:30 pm to 4:30 pm

  • Reviewing basic perspective fundamentals: horizon line, vanishing points, 1-2-3 point perspective

  • Using SketchUp massing models, site photos, and google images as a base for sketches.

  • Learning composition techniques for eye level, small format drawing.

  • Making the connection between comparative drawing and imaginative drawing via the analytical drawing method

  • Simplifying form using the quick sketch method.

  • Designing in perspective using photos or sketchup massing models as your base

  • Learning insights and tips for quick sketch and abbreviated drawing techniques

Part 2: Aerial Perspectives Friday, June 16, 2017: 12:30 pm to 4:30 pm

  • Reviewing more basic perspective fundamentals: horizon line, vanishing points, 1-2-3 point perspective.

  • Using SketchUp massing models, site photos, and google images as a base for drawing aerials

  • Learning composition techniques for aerial perspective.

  • Learning easy method for drawing aerial views on the fly, working on paper or a whiteboard.

  • Designing aerial perspective using photos or sketchup massing models as your base.

  • Learning insights and tips for quick sketch and abbreviated drawing techniques

COST: $75 per session to be paid online prior to workshop to guarantee registration. Payments will be accepted at the door as space permits (cash or check written out to APA-CMS).
