APA-CMS: Innovative Engagement – Tools & Techniques for Outreach

Whether working with a team of seasoned professionals or organizing a grass roots effort, come learn about innovative tools and techniques for getting the most out of your community outreach process. This workshop will feature presentations from four outreach specialists and conclude with Q&A and discussion. Case studies will be used to inform workshop participants about grass roots methods for increasing planning process participation, workshop facilitation strategies for generating community-authored plan content, and a range of emerging crowdsourcing and on-line engagement tools to engage a wide cross-section of the community.

SPEAKERS:

Devin Lavigne, AICP, LEED AP, is Principal and Co-founder of Houseal Lavigne Associates where he has spearheaded the creation of sMap an engaging online mapping tool that allows users to individually or collectively create maps in a common map gallery. Doug Hammel, AICP, is a Senior Associate at Houseal Lavigne Associates with 15 years of experience in helping communities throughout the United States to develop locally-driven plans. His expertise in public engagement provides the foundation for comprehensive plans, subarea plans, and development regulations. Kyla Williams is Director of Operations at Smart Chicago Collaborative, a civic organization devoted to improving lives in Chicago through technology and an affiliate program of The Chicago Community Trust/The Chicago Community Foundation. Kyla has worked in the field of Human Services for over 20 years and is also the President and Founder for Technically Human, a consultant firm that provides services to non-profit organizations, governmental entities and faith-based institutions. Berenice Vallecillos is an Outreach Associate at CMAP where she specializes in engaging elected officials, business owners, community leaders, and diverse constituencies in land use and transportation related matters. She has provided outreach assistance to communities throughout Northeastern Illinois, engaging over 4,000 diverse stakeholders at the municipal and county level.
