About the event

APA-IL Diversity Committee is excited to host the second annual Equity in Planning Panel and Networking Event. This year's panel discussion will focus on issues of diversity and inclusion in the field of transportation planning. The two-hour panel discussion will be followed by 1½ hour breakout session aimed at bringing together planning students and professionals from a wide variety of backgrounds. This is a free event.

Thank you to the event's sponsors: Women's Transportation Seminars, Greater Chicago Chapter (WTS), an international organization dedicated to building the future of transportation through the global advancement of women and UIC's student planning groups, including the Urban Planning and Policy Student Association (UPPSA), Women in Planning and Public Administration, Society of Black Urban Planners (SBUP), and the Latino Planning Organization for Development, Education, and Regeneration (LPODER).

The panel includes:

  • Jacky Grimshaw, Vice President, Government Affairs, Center for Neighborhood Technology. Jacky has created and led CNT’s transportation and air quality programs for over a decade. Jacky advocates for transit in the Chicago region, fighting for mass transit reform and dedicated funding in the Chicago region.
  • Dr. Jesus Barajas, Assistant Professor of Regional and Urban Planning, University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign. Dr. Barajas's work investigates the relationships between the built environment, social factors, and transportation policy on travel behavior and safety for historically disadvantaged population groups.
  • Roberto Requejo, Program Director, Elevated Chicago. Elevated Chicago is a collaborative of organizations advancing racial equity in transit-oriented development. During the past 15 years Roberto has helped public, private, and nonprofit organizations become more effective, inclusive, and influential, playing a variety of roles including team leader, diversity and inclusion strategist, relationship manager, and grant maker.
  • Audrey Wennink, Director of Transportation, the Metropolitan Planning Council. Audrey directs MPC’s transportation efforts and coordinates transportation initiatives with other facets of planning including affordable housing, land use, equity, and the environment. She leads transportation research and advocacy efforts including pursuing sustainable funding for transportation in Illinois, integration of performance-based planning methods into transportation practice, and developing efforts to boost transportation equity.

and will be moderated by Katanya Raby (Planner, Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning, 2017 APA-IL Emerging Planner of the Year).
