In August 2018, Pace Suburban Bus opened the I-90/Barrington Road Station, which services its new BRT service. This service utilizes new “Flex Lanes” on the inside shoulders of I-90 to bypass congestion, which provides customers with a more reliable commute. The Barrington Road Station includes a park-n-ride lot and two inline stations (one in each direction), which allows express buses to pick up riders without exiting the highway. A pedestrian bridge over the Tollway and two underpasses beneath ramps allow commuters to access eastbound and westbound buses with ease. The investment in walkability at this location connects Pace passengers to adjacent jobs and residences, as well as a forthcoming kiss-n-ride facility.
The Tollway’s SmartRoad system provides real-time information through over-the-road signs about travel times, traffic advisories, and lane closures. This technology also communicates to Pace bus operators when traffic conditions necessitate buses enter the Flex Lane to bypass congestion.
The Village of Hoffman Estates partnered on the interchange and multi-use path design and construction, and they are currently spearheading development opportunities around the station area.
The Pace I-90 Express Service and Illinois Tollway SmartRoad won a 2018 APA-IL Implementation Award.

Rocco Zucchero has spent nearly 20 years working in planning at the Illinois Tollway. He joined the Tollway in 2000 and is currently responsible for leading capital and long-range planning efforts, including implementation of the Jane Addams Memorial Tollway (I-90) rebuilding and widening, the Illinois Route 390 Tollway, I-490 Tollway, and Central Tri-State Tollway (I-294) projects.
While working at the Tollway, Zucchero has been involved in the construction of several major projects across Northern Illinois and has seen first-hand how investments in transportation infrastructure can have a tremendous impact on economic development. He previously worked at IDOT at both the Division of Public Transportation and the Division of Highways. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Organizational Leadership from Purdue University and a Master of Urban Planning and Programming from the University of Illinois-Chicago.
Michael Hankey is the Director of Transportation and Engineering with the Village of Hoffman Estates, a position he has held for over 20 years. His responsibilities include the planning, design, and operation of all transportation projects in the Village. Over his 35 years of experience, he also worked for the California DOT in San Francisco, the Northwestern University Traffic Institute, and Wilbur Smith Associates. Mike received a Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Notre Dame and a Master of Science degree in Transportation from Northwestern University. He is a Registered Professional Engineer in Illinois, a Registered Civil Engineer in California, a Fellow of the Institute of Transportation Engineers, and a member of the Transportation Research Board.
Charlotte Obodzinski, AICP is the Supervisor of Pace’s Rapid Transit Program. She started at the agency in 2008 after earning her Bachelor and Masters degrees in Urban Planning from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Her first six years at Pace were spent as a service planner responsible for the planning and modification of bus routes covering northern Cook and Kane Counties. In 2014, she became the Rapid Transit Program Manager where she oversees the planning of rapid transit services on major arterials and highways throughout Pace’s six-county region, as well as their associated infrastructure. In 2017 she was promoted to supervisor of this program, overseeing the associated planning and engineering work. Her current projects include a partnership with the Illinois Tollway to develop express bus networks, as well as the development and implementation of Pulse services along Milwaukee Avenue, Dempster, Halsted, and 95th Streets. In addition to her duties at Pace, she currently serves on the APA-IL steering committee, Arlington Heights Bike and Pedestrian Commission, and is a member of WTS and the American Institute of Certified Planners.
Kevin Kramer is the Director of Economic Development for the Village of Hoffman Estates. He’s worked in this position for over five years after working as a planner and economic developer for the Village of Barrington. He graduated from the University of Illinois with a degree in Urban and Regional Planning. He serves on several committees including the International Council of Shopping Center’s Illinois State Committee and the International Economic Development Council’s Young Professionals Advisory Committee. He recently started the Young Professionals group for the Illinois Economic Development Association. Kevin proudly earned his Certified Economic Developer status in January 2017. Kevin lives in the Chicago suburbs with his wife and four children, including 12 week old twins.
