11/13 - Illinois Alliance to Prevent Obesity special session: "Connecting Everyday Destinations

Dear APA-IL members, the Illinois Public Health Institute (IPHI) like to invite you to join us the afternoon of Nov. 13th, 2019 at the annual meeting of the Illinois Alliance to Prevent Obesity for a special breakout session: "Connecting Everyday Destinations to Activity-Friendly Routes: Strategy and Funding Opportunities"

This breakout session will highlight local examples of communities working to improve the built environment to promote physical activity and provide information on the new Bike/Walk Fund included in the Illinois capital funding law. Participants will also engage in a facilitated discussion and exercise to prepare their communities for Bike/Walk Fund opportunities and provide input on statewide strategies for promoting physical activity through built environment changes.

Presenters:

  • Amy O’Rourke, Director of Chronic Disease Prevention and Control, Cook County Department Public Health and Leslie Phemister, Transportation Planner, South Suburban Mayors and Managers Association (SSMMA) on SSMMA’s work to integrate health considerations into project scoring for applications for Surface Transportation Program (STP) Funding

  • Melody Geraci, Interim Executive Director, Active Transportation Alliance on training and technical assistance to priority regions

  • Angie Kuehl, Health Educator, Jackson County Health Department on their Murphysboro Community Walk Audit and other community engagement efforts

Cost: no cost if only attending the afternoon breakout session.
