Communities of all types are increasingly encountering inclusive growth and equitable development issues. Planners are on the front lines developing innovative new policies and practices to address these issues. CMAP’s recently released On To 2050 plan includes Inclusive Growth as one of its overarching principles and APA has adopted Inclusive Growth as one of its policy priorities in 2019. This session will focus on inclusive growth and equity development, specifically through a housing lens, discussing what this looks like in different community, neighborhood, and market contexts in the Chicago region.
Speakers Include:
Amy Bashiti has been providing technical assistance for community revitalization strategies with IHDA throughout the state for three years, working in communities as diverse as Cairo, Decatur, and East St. Louis. Prior to joining IHDA, Amy worked in community development and affordable housing consulting. She received her Master’s degree in Urban Planning and Policy (MUPP) from the University of Illinois at Chicago, and her Bachelor of Arts degree from Tulane University.
Ricardo Lopez. As a Senior Planner at the Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning (CMAP), Ricardo works with communities across the Chicago region to devise strategic action plans that lead to improved quality of life and economic prosperity. He has managed a variety of projects from CMAP’s Health Equity Strategy Paper to McKinley Park’s Neighborhood Plan, as well as several local comprehensive and active transportation plans. Ricardo received his Master’s degree in Urban Planning and Policy (MUPP) from the University of Illinois at Chicago, and his Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
Ryan Schmitt, AICP. Over the last four years, Ryan has worked across SB Friedman’s full range of development advisory services, ranging from high-level housing policy work to site-level financial analyses. Prior to joining SB Friedman, Ryan was the Research and Policy Analyst at the Institute for Housing Studies at DePaul University where he analyzed housing market indicators to advise community development partners on policy and program development in Chicago neighborhoods.
