Commissioners from Elburn, Campton Hills, Kaneville, Maple Park, and Sugar Grove attended a Plan Commissioner Training workshop that was hosted by the Village of Elburn. APA-IL and DePaul University’s Chaddick Institute presented the session on March 27, 2019. Fourteen people attended the workshop, including the commissioners and staff. Bob Sullivan, FAICP and Courtney Kashima, AICP were the trainers for the 102nd workshop.

Commissioners are asked to complete a short, anonymous evaluation form at the end of every session. It includes several open ended questions. In answer to one question, the commissioners commented that the most helpful topics were: how the comprehensive plan integrates with other codes and ordinances, ethics, the necessity for comp plan, bylaws, staff reports, ex parte, Open Meetings Act, hearings, commission standards for special use and variances. Other comments from commissioners on the evaluation forms included:

  • Well-structured session

  • Would like to learn more about grants

  • Have them more often, I will bring the entire Planning Commission.

  • Thank you – great presentation!

  • It did go a little long, but it was OK because it was interesting.

Thank you to the Village of Elburn for hosting this training.
