September 21, 2018

The APA-IL Diversity Committee is excited to bring its second annual Equity in Planning Panel discussion back to UIC. This year’s panel discussion will focus on issues of diversity and inclusion in the field of transportation.

This event is generously sponsored by  Women's Transportation Seminar Greater Chicago Chapter (WTS), an international organization dedicated to building the future of transportation through the global advancement of women and UIC's student planning groups, including the Urban Planning and Policy Student Association (UPPSA), Women in Planning and Public Administration (WPPA), Society of Black Urban Planners (SBUP), and the Latino Planning Organization for Development, Education, and Regeneration (LPODER).

The two-hour panel discussion will be followed by 1½ hour breakout session aimed at bringing together planning students and planning professional from a wide variety of backgrounds.

PANELISTS:

  • Jacky Grimshaw, Vice President, Government Affairs, Center for Neighborhood Technology. Jacky has created and led CNT’s transportation and air quality programs for over a decade. Jacky advocates for transit in the Chicago region, fighting for mass transit reform and dedicated funding in the Chicago region.

Dr. Barajas's work investigates the relationships between the built environment, social factors, and transportation policy on travel behavior and safety for historically disadvantaged population groups.

  • Roberto Requejo, Program Director, Elevated Chicago. Elevated Chicago is a collaborative of organizations advancing racial equity in transit-oriented development. During the past 15 years Roberto has helped public, private, and nonprofit organizations become more effective, inclusive, and influential, playing a variety of roles including team leader, diversity and inclusion strategist, relationship manager, and grant maker.

  • Audrey Wennink, Director of Transportation, the Metropolitan Planning Council. Audrey directs MPC’s transportation efforts and coordinates transportation initiatives with other facets of planning including affordable housing, land use, equity, and the environment.
