Plan Commissioner Training comes to Hoffman Estates

Updated: Jan 2, 2020

Twenty people attended the Hoffman Estates Plan Commission training workshop on June 6, 2018. APA-IL and DePaul University’s Chaddick Institute co-sponsored the training, which was the 86th session since the chapter began the program in 2011.

Those attending included all eleven members of the Planning and Zoning Commission, two Trustees, two Assistant Corporation Counsels, and five staff members. Dan Ungerleider, AICP and Laurie Marston, FAICP were the trainers.

During the training, the commissioners had many thoughtful questions including:

  • How does the Village annex property?

  • What is the difference between an actual conflict of interest and a perceived conflict?

  • When should the comprehensive plan be amended?

  • How much weight should we give to testimony from non-residents?

  • What if we disagree with staff’s suggestions about conditions to impose?

  • Why does the Village Board occasionally disagree with our recommendation to them?

On the anonymous evaluation forms, the commissioners listed the most helpful topics in the curriculium: examples of special uses, commission’s responsibilities, ethics, conflicts of interest, annexation and the subject matters that are not within the jurisdiction of the commission.
