Community and Economic Development Director, Lake in the Hills, IL

The Village of Lake in the Hills, a home rule community of just less than 30,000 residents with a diverse mix of business, recreation and retail resources occupying 10.3 square miles of northeastern Illinois, McHenry County, seeks an experienced professional to serve as our next Community and Economic Development Director. The Village is governed by a President and six Trustees and employs a professional Village Administrator to oversee the day-to-day operations of the Village.

This position is responsible for the administrative oversight and leadership of the Community Development Department and serves as the Economic Development leader; requiring vision and the capability to pursue strategic initiatives. A successful candidate will demonstrate experience leading the Village’s planning, zoning and development functions. Extensive knowledge in long range planning including; natural resources, land use and transportation, public services and facilities, community design, land and subdivision development, zoning regulation and other planning initiatives is required.

The right person will be able to toggle between “big picture” to day-to-day management and will lead a team of five to ensure efficient operation of all Village planning, building, code enforcement, and economic development activities and services. The Community Development Department includes: Assistant Community Development Director, Building Inspector I, Building Inspector II, Property Maintenance Inspector, and a part-time Economic Development Coordinator (position is currently open).

The educational requirements for this position include a Bachelor’s degree in Public or Business Administration, Planning or another applicable field with ten years experience in planning, community development and/or economic development. Master’s Degree preferred with AICP, CEcD, EDFP designation(s) a plus, and five years of supervisory experience. Any combination of education and experience that provides the equivalent knowledge, skills, and abilities will be considered.

The starting salary for this position is $123,486 - $138,305 depending upon experience and qualifications.
