Branding: Beyond the Logo
This joint program between the APA Chicago Metro Section (CMS) and the Municipal Design Review Network (MDRN) of the Chaddick Institute at DePaul University will explore the role of branding in placemaking, urban design, and economic development. We will be discussing the details of successful branding initiatives that are more than just a logo and have effectively captured the community’s identity, appealed to both internal (residents and local businesses) and external (tourists and visitors) audiences, and incorporated architectural and planning aspects that are integral to the community.
Bridget Lane, Director at Business Districts, Inc. (BDI), will provide an overview of branding and why it is important for communities.
Jodi Mariano, Principal Urban Designer at Teska Associates, Inc., will describe how aesthetics are used in planning and design, as well as provide an overview of community branding efforts around the region.
Karie Frilling, Development Services Director at the Village of Orland Park, will share lessons learned with their branding initiative.
Our distinguished speakers and panelists will also talk about the challenges of branding (such as costs and maintenance/lifecycle issues) and how they can be addressed through strategic implementation. After the speaker presentations, there will be a moderated panel discussion and Q&A. Then, after a short break, attendees will separate into breakout sessions to discuss key topics from the morning's panel discussions with the speakers. See complete agenda below.
