All around us, every day, great communities are made in Illinois by APA-IL members. In 2020, our personal and professional lives were disrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic. The APA-IL is proud of its members who persevered and continued to meet the needs of communities in Illinois.

2020 ANNUAL REPORT

Greetings APA-IL Members,

2020 was a year unlike any other we’ve experienced personally or professionally. We are faced with challenges large and small related to public health, social justice, racial inequality, economic hardships, a climate in crisis, and tremendous changes in our transportation systems. Like many of you, I look back fondly on 2019, warts and all. But in other ways, I feel even more excited about what the future might hold. As planners, it is essential for us to create a brighter future because of everything that we are experiencing today. We chose this career to make a difference in our communities. And that time is now.

We probably feel like we don’t have a lot of control over the issues that are facing our communities, but I would encourage our members to see this as an unprecedented moment to transform our challenges into opportunities. The 2020s will be a pivotal era where we need to use everything in our planners toolkit to shape our communities and team up with our residents to create places for people to live, work, and play.

In 2020, APA-IL was proud to lean into our role as a place for planners to learn, teach, and connect. Specifically, our Chapter found numerous ways to lead on issues of race, social justice, and equity. Much credit is due to all of the planners throughout the state who are grappling with issues of structural racism and social equity. You have been having courageous conversations with your coworkers, your bosses, your local officials, and your residents. We need to listen and we need to act in order to make change. Wherever you are in this space, keep moving forward, push yourself out of your comfort zone – one good decision can lead to another.

All the best,
Jake
