- including Sarah Klipfel Wiebenson, a graduate student from the University of Illinois

The purpose of the award is to recognize outstanding attainment in

2006 Upper Midwest Four State Conference
Great Planning Begins at Home
Rob Kowalski, AICP, Conference Co-Chair
This years Four State Conference, entitled Great Planning Begins at Home
will include participation from Wisconsin, Minnesota and Iowa. It will be
held at the Pheasant Run Resort in St. Charles, Illinois. The conference
will feature multiple conference session tracks, several mobile workshops, a
keynote address from John McCarron of the Chicago Tribune, an opening
reception at the resort, and of course, a golf outing.
On the road to success
UIC student Emily Tapia gains valuable hands on experience by
participating in the mentorship program sponsored by ILAPA.

For Good or Ill, Boom in Ethanol Reshapes Economy of Heartland
Corn has turned into yellow gold for small towns across the Midwest
that have seen population loss, farm consolidation and artificially
low corn prices. At least 39 new plants are to be completed over the
next 9-12 months, making the U.S. the world's largest ethanol
producer. But President Bush's call to replace 1.6M barrels of
imported oil would mean at least half the nation's farmland would be
needed to grown corn for fuel.

Depot development plan moves forward
If the application is successful, the Savanna FTZ will be the third
such zone in the region, along with Rockford and Rock Island. All
three zones can be marketed together to attract additional businesses

UTC Receives NSF IGERT
On July 18, 2006
The University of Illinois at Chicago Urban Transportation Center along with several other UIC
departments received a $3.1 million National Science Foundation
IGERT grant to establish a doctoral program on Computational
Transportation. The program will involve transportation specialists along with
computer scientists and business management specialists to conduct basic
research in the field of Intelligent Transportation Systems.
University of Illinois at Chicago to Offer Bachelor's of Arts
in Urban and Public Affairs
Illinois Board of Higher Education (IBHE) approved UIC to offer
a Bachelor of Arts Program in Urban and Public Affairs. The first
students will be admitted in the Fall of 2007.
Foundation Launches Initiative to Boost Skills of Midwest Workforce
The Joyce Foundation has launched its "Shifting Gears"
initiative, a three-year $10 million effort to improve the education
and skills training of the Midwest workforce and promote regional
economic growth. As part of the initiative, the Foundation issued a
request for proposals from Midwest states to provide stronger
links between the often-fragmented systems of education and job
training, so that workers get post-secondary credentials that qualify
them for jobs in today’s economy.
